A Tisket A Tasket…What About A Beautiful Basket?

Easter Baskets

When I was growing up, I only remember getting Easter baskets, and when those were emptied of candy, I think my Mother threw the baskets away. So, what kind of baskets you say, and why would anyone care?

Besides holding candy, baskets are super utilitarian! From organizational use, gift packaging, and storage, baskets have been around for centuries. So how does this fit into my Southwestern Boho design motif? Well, baskets have also been displayed as pieces of revered art and craftmanship. Intricate weaving patterns and beautiful materials can be found in even the most simplest baskets, and the lend themselves well to hanging as a piece of art on your wall.

There are four different type of basketry weave methods Here are some examples of the basket weaves below. These are all beautiful in their own right:

Basket Weaves

  • Coiling – using grasses, rushes and pine needles.
  • Plaiting – using materials that are wide and braid-like: palms, yucca or New Zealand flax.
  • Twining – using materials from roots and tree bark.
  • Wicker – using willow, rattan, reed, and bamboo, but synthetic fibers are now also used.

As you can see from the examples, the beauty and functionality are limitless.
